“Inspired by Brooklyn’s current electronic scene and ’80s acid house, the New York trio applies a sophisticated sheen to analog-driven electro-pop.”
– Pitchfork

“It’s more an approximation of that glorious feeling that a great song can bring out of you. And how listening again and again to a favorite songs can bring back those memories of when it first grabbed you.”
– Paste

“Brooklyn’s own Flash Trading belong to the camp of electronic musicians that seek to pay homage to classic analog sounds while pushing forward the genre through their bold songwriting.”
– AdHoc

Today, Brooklyn-based indie pop project Flash Trading share their new single + video “On Display.” The 405 premiered the single and accompanying music video, praising, “Featuring a throbbing synthline through the song’s verses, ‘On Display’ initially pulses with ‘Blue Monday’-style energy before opening into a lush expanse of warm chords as Laundry’s ethereal voice draws the listener in tight. The track is a testament to the diverse talents of Laundry and Julius, who display a rare versatility as well as a clear understanding of what has made some of the best ’80s pop stand the test of time.” “On Display” is the a-side of the duo’s forthcoming double-single On Display/Similar Devils – the first offering from the project’s new lineup consisting of Michael Julius and Dani Laundry. Following the release of their 2017 EP, The Golden Mile, the band has played select NYC-area shows, while recording new material to be released this year. Flash Trading’s second EP is slated for release this coming summer – the double-single is just a taste of what’s to come later this year. “On Display” is out now on all DSPs.

The song explores the loneliness and bleakness of a way of life that values excess and consumption, over giving back to others. Julius wrote the song in response to his surroundings, having observed the lifestyle as having a flawed, but ingrained system of values that has become synonymous with the achievement of success and happiness. The driving force of the SH-101 bass line and the live 808 drum machine complement Laundry’s plaintive vocal style.

With “On Display” and “Similar Devils,” Flash Trading return to form with a self-released digital single and b-side that demonstrate the enveloping breadth of their sound. “On Display” pulses with an insistent rhythm that underlines the urgency of Dani’s vocals, while “Similar Devils” sees the group explore a more deliberate tempo with guitar reminiscent of Durutti Column, before taking an unexpected and utterly danceable turn at the end of the song. “On Display” was recorded in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, with Abe Seiferth of Transmitter Park Studio, and mastered by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates&Mastering, Berlin. Flash Trading plans to release an EP later this year.

Since releasing The Golden Mile, Flash Trading has reconfigured its lineup to consist of primary songwriter and producer Michael Julius, a Queens native who has played in various bands throughout the last decade, and vocalist Dani Laundry, who has released a diverse collection of solo material. Julius and Laundry bonded over their love for artists like Prefab Sprout and Kate Bush, and their ambitions to recontextualize those influences in ways that emphasize their resonance in modern culture.

BIO

Flash Trading is a sophistipop dance music project formed in Brooklyn in 2017, and comprised of producer and synth player Michael Julius and singer Dani Laundry. Flash Trading released their first EP, The Golden Mile, in 2017 to praise from PitchforkPaste, and Ad Hoc. Pitchfork wrote, of The Golden Mile, “Their songs work hard to create a space for movement: Their rhythms sway with the insistence of a rocking chair, and as hard-edged as they can get, a certain brightness pervades their work.” The Golden Mile was released on TAG OUT, a multimedia enterprise run by Kris Petersen, formerly of DFA Records, where Kris was instrumental in signing acts like Guerilla Toss, Essaie pas, and Factory Floor. Flash Trading followed up the release of The Golden Mile EP with shows at staple New York venues like Sunnyvale, El Cortez, and C’mon Everybody.

Since releasing The Golden Mile, Flash Trading has reconfigured its lineup to consist of primary songwriter and producer Michael Julius, a Queens native who has played in New York City bands for over a decade, and Dani Laundry, who in her solo work has compiled an incredibly prolific and diverse set of sophistipop and shoegaze tracks on Bandcamp in just a few short years. Mike and Dani bonded over their love for artists like Prefab Sprout and Kate Bush, and their ambitions to recontextualize those influences in ways that emphasize their resonance in modern culture.
