Sun Kin is the project of Oakland-based musician Kabir Kumar, who was born in Bombay, India and brought up moving between five different countries to end up in the Bay Area. His nomadic upbringing informs the way Sun Kin works as a band, with a revolving door lineup that includes musicians from other Bay Area bands like Everyone is Dirty, False Priest, Seemway & Fieldress.
Sun Kin was formed in Berkeley, CA circa 2011, after Kabir’s move from NYC to the Bay, and has released two full length albums (Good Feels (2012) and Moon for Days (2016)) as well as a split album with Brooklyn’s Miserable Chillers (Adoration Room (2018)). A stream of singles released in 2017 and 18 saw coverage on IMPOSE, ObscureSound, Audiofuzz and All Things Go. “Under Standing Waves” (2017), was featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Six Strings playlist in August of 2017.
Sun Kin has supported a diverse roster of artists. In 2019 alone, the project performed with hyper-literate indie pop band Cheekface (LA), “Adobe House” producer Tone Ranger (Santa Fe, NM), and local space emo stalwarts The Y Axes (SF). In addition to a joint Pacific Northwest tour with Miserable chillers in January of 2019, Sun Kin has played at storied Bay Area venues like Starline Social Club (Oakland), Rickshaw Stop, and Amnesia.
