Boston, MA: A prerequisite of taking the deep dive into the music of Matthew Connor is knowing that you’re set to engage with a true auteur- a creator of worlds, an alchemist. Dare we say it, he occupies that coveted space populated by the iconoclasts, the risk takers- Bowie, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and of course, the late Scott Walker.
Today, Matthew offers his latest beaut, a song called “Only Physical.” Of course, we hear his expressive baritone, upfront and center, distinctive as it is familiar, as this is clearly classic songwriting. The track commands a lush, seductive vamp that artfully finds the thread between Otis Blackwell and Blackstar.
To further highlight, the single was co-produced by Matthew Connor and Jeremy Page (Czarface & Ghostface Killah, That Handsome Devil, Kendra Morris). Also, featuring Andy Bauer (Twin Shadow, Eli “Paperboy” Reed) on drums.
Says, Matthew of the song “When I first started writing this song, it felt almost frivolous—who needs a song about sex in times like these?—but soon I began to sense deeper implications in this character’s longing for an endlessly disappearing man. An expression of queer desire is a political act, but what happens when desire isn’t enough?”
Says notable writer, Maura Johnston of Matthew’s work, “Matthew Connor is a crooner for the 21st century, writing heart-wrenching songs that combine the windswept ideals of classic American balladry with stark depictions of modern-day alienation. The Boston-based Connor has a haunting voice that conjures ghosts of past heartbreaks, and he pairs it with spectral guitars that recall country tearjerkers and alt-pop brooding. Connor, who also writes film scores, has proven himself adept at crafting intricately wrought mood music that grabs the most painful parts of his listeners’ souls, then soothes those wounds with his knowing lyrics and evocative voice.”
