BIOGRAPHY

Mathemagician was recorded and produced by the band from 2017 to 2018 between Jesse Valencia’s and Benjamin Turner’s home studios in Show Low, Arizona, with Turner acting as chief engineer. The title is a reference to what Valencia describes as the band’s creative process. “Music is arranged sound. That’s where the math comes in, and then the way we like to work in the studio is to make up stuff on the spot, so there’s this other element where the magic comes in,” Valencia says.

Valencia contributes the majority of the vocals, guitars, keyboards, and additional instrumentation to the album, while Tevin Crabdree returns on bass, Ben Holladay returns on drums, and Benjamin Turner acts as main recording engineer. Jesse would shape the songs first at home, and then the band would record over the demos he made at Turner’s, at which point Jesse would add more layers. “The band had to reel me back from going full Brian Wilson, because we do have to play this live” Jesse jokes, “but they might not stop me on the next one!” The album features eight radio-ready singles in a similar garage rock vein to their previous releases, The Gork...And How To Get It! and More Electric Music, including the heavy psych-rocker ‘Brave New Animal’ and the jazzy space-punk gem ‘Cosmonautical’.
